Kettlebells: The Death of the Dumbbell

Fitness is fickle. Analyzing the market trends of any given year would be monumental task, as each year a new product or practice seems to pack people into gyms, ashrams, and training centers. When once the mere act of bodybuilding was revolutionary, now it is as old hat as Barney the Dinosaur. From Pilates to yoga to kickboxing to Brazilian wrestling, the innovations of building better bodies never seem to end. Stronger abs, bulging biceps, stable cores, total body flexibility — the range of goals are as divergent as the individuals involved.

DDNS: Creating a 1:1 Ratio

The acronym can be off-putting, but at its core, all a DDNS is a service that maps domain names to IP addresses. Hopefully, you are aware of what both IP addresses and domain names are. I thought not. An IP address is an Internet Protocol address assigned to individual computers in any given network. These addresses are sequences of numbers known as the Ipv4 and Ipv6 conventions, which can look like 220.11.243.163 (for IPv4), and 2020:db9:1:1234:6:878:2:9 (for IPv6).

A New Take On Interior Design: Feng Shui

The first decade of the 21st Century has witnessed the emergence of a new trend in interior design. Ironically, that new trend is approximately 3,000 years old and has little to do with Louis XV, Victorian, or Art Deco design themes. Rather, it is a comprehensive system not only for decorating, but also for life. Few interior design specialties can make such a boast.

The WLP: Leading the Way

The Women’s Leadership Program at George Washington University is committed to helping women develop leadership skills through a cross-pollination of academic and intellectual fields. Inspired by the exploits of Elizabeth J. Somers, the WLP is a yearlong, residential program wherein selected students participate in social, political, intellectual, artistic, and technological courses.

A Historical Survey of George Washington University

Though George Washington was the first president of the United States, the university bearing his name did not receive its Congressional charter until 1821. Washington had argued for the creation of a university in the District of Columbia for some time. Indeed, he willed fifty shares of his Potomac Company towards the establishment of the university. It would be another president, James Monroe, who would sign the congressional charter bringing the school to life.

Follow the Leader

It is often argued that leadership is not an innate skill. To be sure there is a case for personal charisma or even the ability to inspire those around you, but true leadership, the kind that rallies nations, is a refined, learned skill. Military intuitions, like West Point, have long believed that leaders are trained, not born. Leading men and women into battle or into the boardroom, the skills are essentially the same. Is it a coincidence that a disproportionate amount of military personnel find themselves in leadership positions in the corporate sphere?

A Serious Profession: Photography

Serious photography means artistic, well-considered photography. As such, it also entails a vast scope of equipment, tools, and techniques that make most point-and-shoot enthusiasts, just that: an enthusiast. Though a hobby is an admirable thing, the professional consideration of photography requires serious dedication. Most hobbyist never bother learning the rules of Depth of Field or which f/stop is best to use on an overcast day because the art of photography is now geared towards the hobbyist.

USP: Protecting Us

Among the top ten topics guaranteed induce sleep, surely science and chemistry are amongst the top two. To be sure, I was one of the kids who fell asleep in science class. I mean, I get it: chemical A mixes with chemical B, rendering reagent C — or something to that effect. Then again, I have never made it my business to pioneer new compounds to better the plight of my fellow man. That’s where the professionals come into play, and if you’re a professional, you need the right chemicals to make the right medications or supplements.

When Stars Fall on Pasadena

To quote a bad line from a mediocre movie: “Pop quiz, hotshot!” What do Albert Einstein, Amelia Earhart, Kevin Costner, Julia Child, George S. Patton, Eddie Van Halen, David Lee Roth, and Paul McCartney all have in common? True, they’ve all got (or had) killer hair, but more than that, they are (or were at one time), residents of sunny Pasadena, California. If you’ve ever visited (or lived in) the City of Roses, you’ll know why they all chose to call this fabulous city home.

The Power of a Throw Pillow

Contrary to popular perception, interior decorating is a demanding, time-consuming profession. It has become a matter of cultural ridicule to cast interior decorators as flamboyant personalities that manage to tie a room together with a simple throw pillow. To be sure, a simple throw can indeed pull a room together but that sensibility comes from the union of innate style and a trained eye. Like any professional worth his or her salt, an interior decorator must work hard to earn his or her position.
