Get more clients with small business email newsletters

by Tara Jacobsen

To stay in business these days you have to prospect for new clients, get those prospects to buy and keep in touch with your past clients. Email newsletters will allow you to do that and more, easily and without breaking the bank!

Many small business owners fail to recognize the power of constant communication with their clients. Your clients are probably not actively seeking someone else to provide the service that you do, BUT if they do not hear from you regularly, they might be tempted to change vendors if another company comes along with a powerful message.

Small business owners today have a powerful tool in email newsletters. This tool allows you to stay in touch with your clients on a regular basis even when they are not currently considering making a purchase. Staying top of mind in today’s tough market is a vital chore of every small business owner.

Some things that a great email newsletter should include are information relevant to your industry or product, some affiliated vendors you think might provide complimentary services (and who can help offset the cost of the emailing), advertisements about your company and any industry related statistics you can find. Make sure that your information is all related to your product or service.

You may be able to use your normal email program to send out your email newsletter for a while, but once you get over about 200 names on your list you need to move over to a “real” email service like Aweber or Constant Contact. These services help immeasurably to guarantee that you are complying with the current spam laws and also increase the chances that your message will get delivered.

I often get the question, how regularly should I send my email newsletter. Well, every business is different, but I would not recommend sending more than two times per month unless you are very good at generating content, highly relevant content. Because of the low cost, it is easy to get carried away and send lots of emails out, but it could tire your list and you could wind up with a bunch of unsubscribes, not a good thing!

Small business owners sometimes struggle with the question of where to get their email list. This is actually really easy! If you belong to your local chamber, the may be willing to give you a list. Any associations that you belong to might also be a good source. But the best, easiest and fastest is just to ask. Call you past clients and ask them for their email address. Go through your current email client (like outlook or gmail) and add the people you talk to anyways.

While you are busy writing your email newsletter, make sure you are also growing your email list by asking your past and current customers if they have anyone they can refer you to. Let them know that you welcome the opportunity to provide great service to their friends and family and that you would love to add them to your informative email newsletter list!
